Is gray divorce on the rise?

On Behalf of | Dec 17, 2020 | Divorce |

These days, divorce is not just something on the rise among newer couples. Even in couples over 50, divorce has grown steadily more common. At this age, divorce is often referred to as “gray divorce”. You may also hear the terms diamond divorce or silver splitter.

While gray divorce numbers go up every year, many other things about it remain unclear. For example, is there any reason that gray divorce is on the rise?

Priorities change over time

Business Insider provides information for couples contemplating gray divorce. They also take a look at some of the most common reasons behind these divorces. First; prioritization of personal happiness. Many people put themselves first in their own life these days. Why stay in a marriage that does not bring you joy? Why put yourself through the hardship of a loveless coupling if you mutually agree it is not good for either of you?

Changes to society and health

Societal and health changes make divorce at later ages more possible and reasonable, too. For many, 50 is no longer that old. There is an entire life ahead of you. Plenty of gray divorcees move on to find new love. They do not have to deal with as much stigma, either. In the past, a divorce could act like a brand on your reputation. These days, almost everyone knows at least one couple that has split up.

After your 50s, you often have more free time than you did during your working years. This is a great period to reestablish relationships. It is also a time of self-discovery. If you and your spouse decide things are no longer worth pursuing, that choice is up to you.
